Hyster launches Tier 4i / Stage IIIB Big Truck range

Hyster launches Tier 4i / Stage IIIB Big Truck range

Hyster is reported to be the first materials handling equipment manufacturer to offer a full range of Tier 4i / Stage IIIB compliant equipment for ports, terminals and heavy industry.  New Cummins engines and system technologies now featured across Hyster’s Big Truck range (over 16t / 40,000lbs), are proven to deliver low levels of exhaust emissions and up to 15% fuel savings.

From January 2011, container handling equipment and high capacity ‘Big’ forklift trucks will be affected by new emissions regulations, known as “Tier 4i (Interim)”, the EPA regulations for the North American market, and “Stage IIIB”, the European Union equivalent.  The regulations affect all diesel powered off-highway equipment available for sale in these markets with power ratings over 173 hp (129 kW).

At a high profile global event in November, in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Hyster unveiled a full range of production Big Trucks above 16t (40,000lbs) lifting capacity, featuring new engines and new system technologies to ensure full Tier 4i / Stage IIIB compliance.

Hyster’s world class Big Truck assembly line in Nijmegen will now build the 16-18t (40,000-45,000lbs) and 25-32t (55,000-70,000lbs) forklift truck ranges featuring the new Cummins QSB 6.7 engine (up to 270 hp, 201kW). The Hyster 5-8 high empty container handler (based on the 16-18t forklift) will also feature the new Tier 4i / Stage IIIB compliant engine.  On the larger models, the emissions regulations will be met using the new Cummins QSL9 (up to 370 hp, 276kW) which will now power Hyster’s big 36-48t (80,000-105,000lbs) forklift trucks, laden container handlers and reachstackers.

Antoon Cooijmans, Product Manager Big Trucks explains “With the new trucks, we have improved fuel efficiency and enhanced productivity, thanks to faster engine response.  Hyster Big Trucks are also cleaner and quieter in operation than ever before with reduced CO2 emissions”.

In addition to the Cummins engine technologies, Hyster has introduced new performance optimisation developments, such as cooling on demand, load sensing  hydraulics, RPM management and alternate engine idle speed, to help further reduce the total fuel consumption in all applications.

“Depending on rating, duty cycle and application, the new Hyster trucks can achieve in the region of 15% better fuel consumption compared to the previous models” Antoon adds, explaining that operators can select either an ECO-eLo “fuel efficiency” or HiP “high performance” mode. The HiP mode is the normal operating mode, whereas the ECO-eLo mode reduces the maximum engine speed and optimises fuel efficiency.

The new Cummins engines deliver rapid boost at low engine rpm and then maintain high boost at higher rpm independent of engine speed, thanks to the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT™) which varies the exhaust gas flow into the turbine wheel.

Combining cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with an improved High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system enables cleaner and more efficient combustion, and effectively controls NOx emissions.  The fully integrated Cummins Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) also reduces particulate emissions by over 90%.  Exhaust flows out of the engine and into the Particulate Filter system where it is collected and then oxidized (regenerated).

Further features of the new engine include the new Cummins Direct Flow™ air filtration system which optimises filtration efficiency, and the Cummins crankcase ventilation system prevents crankcase emissions escaping from the engine with a highly-efficient coalescing filter.  It also eliminates oil mist and tiny oil droplets to maintain clean engine operating conditions.    With engine and transmission protection systems, Hyster ensures excellent reliability in the most demanding operations everywhere.

Tier 4i / Stage IIIB models are available now and Hyster will still be offering Tier 3 versions of its equipment for sale to regions outside of the EU and North America.   For further information about the regulations and specific benefits of each model in Hyster’s Big Truck range, visit www.hyster-bigtrucks.com.
